I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman

Portfolio piece for this extraordinary work of existential horror originally published in French in 1995. To me, it's a novel about imagination and knowledge as forms of freedom, even in confinement. I wanted the design to have the same ambiguity as the text, with no easy answers. The tall figures barring an alien landscape could be the male guards, or the women themselves, standing as barriers to their own expansiveness.
